J.J. Smith
An expert in speed and agility, J.J. has trained athletes and teams for the past six years. His programs have
resulted in success. (John Booth; KC Brigade WR-former NAIA Player of the Year, Lance Brandenburgh; Starting LB
Nebraska Cornhuskers, Chase Coffman; Starting TE Missouri Tigers, and many other K.C. area athletes.)
Born
in Kansas City, MO, J.J. graduated from Raytown South High School where he was a stand-out athlete in football,
basketball and track. He received All-Metro honors in football and Track and set his schools 100 meter record
at 10.33.
Smith accepted a scholarship to play football at Kansas State under head coach Bill Snyder where he
helped to turn K-State's program around. With his first carry as a freshman he ran for a 72 yd touchdown and
sparked a stellar career. He finished as a First Team All Big-Eight selection after setting Kansas State career
marks in rushing yard and touchdowns and he was also nominated for the Doak Walker award (the nation's top running back).
While at K-State J.J. also was a sprinter for the Track team and he trained under Olympic sprinter and Coach
Trevor Grahm.
After graduating from K-State with a degree in social science, Smith accepted a Free Agent
contract with his favorite team - the Kansas City Chiefs. His first play vs. the Washington Redskins Smith
returned a punt 56 yds for a touchdown. Smith was with the team for two years until a knee injury sidelined him.
Smith then pursued a career in coaching. In 2000 he accepted a job coaching the running backs at Friends
University in Wichita, KS. His second coaching stint came as running back/special team coordinator for Mid
America Nazarene University where he helped them to three straight playoff appearances. While coaching at MNU,
Smith obtained a Masters degree in Business Administration.
In 2005 J.J. was accepted to the NFL's minority
internship program where he worked with the K.C. Chief's coaching staff under Dick Vermil. Smith then accepted
a running back coach position with the Frankfurt Galaxy, in the NFL's European League. In the summer of 06 the
Galaxy won the NFLE championship. His running back Roger Robinson (Arizona Cardinals) broke the All-Time Rushing
record, and Butchie Wallace (Atlanta Falcons) was voted MVP of the championship game. Smith is currently a
Metro Sports Television Analyst.
