Dan Gurley MD
Dan is a Kansas City native with deep roots in the sporting world. His father, Jim, was a star athlete in the 1950's. He went on to coach at Southeast High School in Kansas City, MO. Jim left full time teaching but continued to excel in sports through his kids' little league teams. Both Dan, and later his brother Greg, were standout basketball players at Shawnee Mission South. Dan led his team to the Kansas state tournament where his team placed 3rd and he was awarded All-State honors. Dan went on to pursue athletics as a profession by pursuing a career in Sports Medicine. He completed his collegiate, pre-med work at Texas Christian University. He went on to receive his medical degree at the University of Kansas. Dr. Gurley followed his dream to becoming a sports medicine physician and orthopaedic surgeon by completing a 5 year residency training program in Orthopaedic Surgery at the KU Medical Campus at Wichita. His sub-specialty training in Sports Medicine and Arthroscopic Surgery was completed at the Mississippi Sports Medicine and Orthopaedic Center in Jackson, MS.

Dr. Gurley currently is the team physician for the UMKC Kangaroos and the Blue Valley Tigers. His clinical practice at College Park Family Care Center focuses on the care and treatment of sports medicine injuries and minimally invasive, arthroscopic surgery of the shoulder, elbow, and knee.

Dr. Gurley is married to his college sweetheart, Susie. They have 3 children: Jeff, Olivia, and Will. The Gurley kids are active in all sports and Dan coaches them in their activities especially basketball. Dr. Gurley still finds time for basketball, running, golf, and water/snow skiing.


J.J. Smith
An expert in speed and agility, J.J. has trained athletes and teams for the past six years. His programs have resulted in success. (John Booth; KC Brigade WR-former NAIA Player of the Year, Lance Brandenburgh; Starting LB Nebraska Cornhuskers, Chase Coffman; Starting TE Missouri Tigers, and many other K.C. area athletes.)

Born in Kansas City, MO, J.J. graduated from Raytown South High School where he was a stand-out athlete in football, basketball and track. He received All-Metro honors in football and Track and set his schools 100 meter record at 10.33.

Smith accepted a scholarship to play football at Kansas State under head coach Bill Snyder where he helped to turn K-State's program around. With his first carry as a freshman he ran for a 72 yd touchdown and sparked a stellar career. He finished as a First Team All Big-Eight selection after setting Kansas State career marks in rushing yard and touchdowns and he was also nominated for the Doak Walker award (the nation's top running back). While at K-State J.J. also was a sprinter for the Track team and he trained under Olympic sprinter and Coach Trevor Grahm.

After graduating from K-State with a degree in social science, Smith accepted a Free Agent contract with his favorite team - the Kansas City Chiefs. His first play vs. the Washington Redskins Smith returned a punt 56 yds for a touchdown. Smith was with the team for two years until a knee injury sidelined him.

Smith then pursued a career in coaching. In 2000 he accepted a job coaching the running backs at Friends University in Wichita, KS. His second coaching stint came as running back/special team coordinator for Mid America Nazarene University where he helped them to three straight playoff appearances. While coaching at MNU, Smith obtained a Masters degree in Business Administration.

In 2005 J.J. was accepted to the NFL's minority internship program where he worked with the K.C. Chief's coaching staff under Dick Vermil. Smith then accepted a running back coach position with the Frankfurt Galaxy, in the NFL's European League. In the summer of 06 the Galaxy won the NFLE championship. His running back Roger Robinson (Arizona Cardinals) broke the All-Time Rushing record, and Butchie Wallace (Atlanta Falcons) was voted MVP of the championship game. Smith is currently a Metro Sports Television Analyst.


Sean M. Wheeler, MD
Dr. Wheeler is a long-time resident of Kansas City, having gone to high school at Bishop Miege. He played wide receiver at Texas Christian University in Fort Worth, TX before transferring to Kansas State where he played under Coach Snyder. Medical school was at University of Kansas before going back to Fort Worth, TX to John Peter Smith hospital which is considered by many to be the top Family Practice residency in the country. He was elected president of all the hospital residencies while in residency.

Dr. Wheeler practiced in Belleville, KS (pop. 2300) for 6 years while being the quintessential 'small town doctor'. He then went back to Fort Worth to complete both a sports medicine fellowship and a pain fellowship. In 2005, he moved back to Kansas City with his wife Susan and 5 children and currently resides south of Louisburg. He is the only fellowship trained primary care sports physician in all of Johnson County, and one of only 4 physicians in the country fellowship-trained and board-certified in both sports medicine and pain management. He practices at College Park Family Care Center and prior to founding Coliseum Sports Group, Dr. Wheeler had long been interested in sports performance.


Shelley Lewis, PT
Shelley Lewis is a Physical Therapist with a passion for health, fitness and sport. She studied Exercise Science and Biology at the University of Nebraska, and completed her master's degree in physical therapy from the University of Kansas Medical Center. Her desire to share her passion for health and exercise with others has led to her specializing in orthopedic, sports related physical therapy as well as injury prevention and performance enhancement for young athletes.

Shelley is certified in Strength and Conditioning, and Pilates. She currently incorporates extensive "core" strengthening into her clinical practice in south Overland Park. The Institute of Rehab Health and Fitness provides a variety of phyiscal therapy and health realted services including sports performance, injury prevention, and rehabilitation programs.

Shelley and her husband Tahaun reside in the Kansas City area and have three children, Bristol, Brianna, and Braxton. All three kids are very active in a variety sports. In her spare time, Shelley enjoys running, pilates, snow skiing, and golf.
